It was an atmosphere of fun as enthusiasts from all around the world gathered at the LA Design Center. The main reason is for the unveiling of the much anticipated Tesla Model Y. Based on the reaction of the guests, there’s no doubt the new all-electric Model Y SUV has lived up to its expectations.
Tesla Model Y design
At first glance, the Model Y looks like a Tesla Model 3. However, it is 10% bigger and bulkier than Model 3. Both the Model 3 and the Model Y share a lot in common but exterior design and interior. Inside the new car, it has the same 15-inch touch screen which controls all the main functions of the car. This car is a big SUV which sits 7 adult passengers quite comfortably.
Tesla Model Y performance
It is important to note that the Model Y comes in 4 variants. They are the Standard Range, Long Range, Dual Motor AWD, and Performance versions. However, the long-range version will be released into the market soon. The standard range version clocks 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, the Long Range in 5.5 seconds, the Dual Motor AWD in 4.8 seconds, and the Performance trim in a Model 3-comparable 3.5 seconds. Also, it is important to also note that the top speed of the 4 variants differs accordingly. It clocks at 120 mph for the Standard Range, 130 mph for the Long Range, 135 mph for the Dual Motor AWD, and 150 mph for the Performance version.
Tesla Model Y range
One thing the new Model Y boasts of is its impressive range. On a single charge, the Model Y standard range variant can go up to 230 miles, the longe range variant goes for 300 miles while the Dual Motor AWD and Performance Model Y get 280 miles of range per charge.
The Model Y supports fast charging and is compatible with the Supercharger V3 network which charges at 250 kW. What this means is that one hour of charging can give you a range of 1000 miles.
Model Y price and availability
The car is expected to go into full production by the next year 2020. Notwithstanding, interested buyers can place an order by making a $2,500 deposit only. The Long Range, Dual Motor AWD, and Performance versions will be produced first while the standard range will be produced in 2021. The company plans to make the Model Y affordable for most people. It will go for $39,000 for the base variant and $47,000 for the Long Range version. A Dual Motor AWD version will cost $51,000 and a Performance variant will be priced at $60,000.
