World’s first external airbags unveiled. Set to improve car safety

A company known as ZF has come up with a concept pre-crash side airbags that act as a huge pillow which can safe both car and drivers in even of a car accident. ZF is a company which specializes in the manufacture and supply of automotive parts. Of course, I’m pretty sure most people have never heard of it before now but car enthusiasts like us must have heard of it at one time or the other.

To refresh your memory, ZF is the brain behind the popular 8-speed transmission that you see in a bunch of modern cars today. ZF makes more than just transmissions, they make other car components as well as invent new ones for the future. One of such futuristic inventions is the external car airbag. This external airbag inflates just as you are about to get bashed by an oncoming vehicle. This technology is necessary to minimize the impact. Minimize injuries that will be sustained by occupants of both cars and also minimize damage to the vehicle.

The company ZF is calling it the “World’s first pre-crash external side airbag system.” The company is also the brain behind the 2016  pedestrian-catching hood airbag that Land Rover was experimenting with.

However, the guys at ZF think that they’ve made a lot of progress. In this new concept, the airbag is integrated into the cars’ sensors. So it can pop-up just in time before the crash. It is designed in such a way that it doesn’t pop up whenever a car comes too close, only when it senses an imminent crash. It has less than one second to make a decision and pumps the airbag full just before the impact occurs. There’s no doubt that this technology will be very important in saving lives in the future. I hope automakers around the world adopt this system for future cars.
