Honestly, OnStream was the definition of a “perfect” free movie streaming app platform; it had the best interface I’ve come across for movie streaming apps and had every new movie almost immediately as they’re released. It’s even more exciting that you don’t need to sign up to start streaming on the app, but I had to, so I could save favorites, create watchlists, and never lose my binge-watching progress; yeah, those were some of the perks of signing up.

Now, back to the purpose of this article: OnStream has shut down, and no one is sure if it’s coming back. Personally, I’ve waited months, hoping it would come back online, but it hasn’t. So, I set out to look for alternatives that would give me a close experience to OnStream, and of course, for free. OnStream was my ideal Netflix alternative, but now I have a couple of them I toggle between, and I wish to share them here.

OnStream App Alternatives for Android TVs

I’ve got to tell you this: I personally checked out all of these apps on my TV, and I say that OnStream is still my best. However, while waiting for it to miraculously make a comeback, I’d be shuffling between these alternatives. Most importantly, before we start the list, be sure you’re going to deal with ads on these ones. All of them.

1. MovieBox (Download for TV)

Honestly? This is the closest you can come to OnStream, movie-wise. This one hosts the latest movies as soon as they go out, and boasts a massive collection across genres and categories. Of course, you won’t find this one on the Google Play Store, so I advise you download the original APK from the official website (linked above).

Personally, I don’t like the somewhat cluttered interface of MovieBox, and the ads piss me off, but then it works for free streaming, and as I noted earlier, it has the most recently released movies like OnStream does. You don’t need to sign up to get started, but if you do sign up, you can download movies to watch them later, offline – a feature I wished OnStream offered.

Pros:

• Closest you can get to OnStream at the moment for Android TVs
• You get the latest movies almost immediately as they’re released
• Literally any title on Netflix is also available on MovieBox
• You can download movies for offline playback if you sign up

Cons:

• It has ads, and the way the ads are served pisses me off.
• You may not like the UI, just like I don’t.
• You have to pay for the premium plan to remove ads.

2. Plex (Grab from Play Store)

I have always loved Plex; it’s a multipurpose multimedia platform. As you may already know, the Plex app has a section for on-demand movies you can watch for free without any subscription. The catch is, the titles you’d find here are old-time classics that date way back to the 90s, early 2000s, and 2010s. I mean, if you’re looking to watch movies like Van Damme’s Street Fighter, Arnold’s Commando, and those sort of classics, you’d find them on Plex.

Also, Plex serves you skippable ads as you stream, and away from the on-demand titles, you can explore the apps, live TV shows, plus other packages. Of course, you can stream new titles on Plex, but those don’t come free. I visit this one if I’m looking for old blockbusters and classics; it doesn’t get any better than streaming those titles than on Plex.

Pros:

• Closest legal alternative to OnStream
• Well-designed user interface
• Best place to find old-time classics and blockbusters
• The VOD library is completely free and has tens of thousands of titles.

Cons:

• It’s got ads
• You can’t stream newer movies for free

3. StreamFlix (Get on Play Store)

This is the third, and it’s my last. I couldn’t find a number in my search for OnStream alternatives that still work, just these few. StreamFlix is another good one, similar to MovieBox, and that makes it an alternative to OnStream. You can grab it straight from the Play Store on your Android TV. It offers new movies, but doesn’t have the diverse library of OnStream.

StreamFlix lets you watch movies for free without even signing up, and the resolution options are decent for any TV size. One of the reasons I love this one is that it allows you to download the movies even without you signing up. However, if you want to eliminate the ads, you have to opt for its Basic or Premium paid plans; both are billed monthly in Euros.

Pros:

• Genuinely free movies and TV shows
• Newly released movies are available
• You can download the movies on your TV and watch later
• HD quality streams

Cons:

• It’s all about “ads” again
• The UI isn’t that lovely to me

What Else?

These are my picks for OnStream app alternatives that work in 2026. I personally installed and tried all of these on my TV and they worked. However, none of them gave me the premium feel OnStream offered for free, and ouch, the ads! They piss me off. But yeah, I can cope with these and pray that OnStream makes a return sometime soon.
