PS5 is expected to launch during the holiday season in 2020 – it interprets that we should expect Sony’s PlayStation 5 in the Q4 of 2020. Well, so far, a lot of news and rumors have emerged in connected with PS5, but here are the things we think you should know. The DualSense controller coming along with the PS5 console will introduce new features. Plus, there are other things that Sony’s PS5 will launch with, including support for PS4 games.

PS5 Launch Date

There’s no specific date for the release of PlayStation 5 (PS5). However, Sony said it’s coming through during the “Holiday 2020.” This means the console will be available, most likely, between October – December 2020.

What is PlayStation 5 (PS5)

Sony’s PS5 (or PlayStation 5) is the next-gen PlayStation. This PlayStation model will launch with so many impressive features (as highlighted by Sony). Sony has been tight-lipped regarding this new console, but various sources have confirmed some details about the upcoming PS5.

PS5 Design and Build

The coming of PlayStation 5 was first hinted by Mark Cerny – Sony’s lead architect in Q1 2019. However, at CES 2020, Sony uncovered the official logo for PS5; it’s similar to other PS consoles. Sony has officially released the features and specifications of this console.

Talking about the hardware of PlayStation 5 – it packs AMD’s 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture alongside an octa-core CPU that runs at a variable frequency, up to 3.5 GHz. Also, the GPU is very much impressive; Sony’s PS5 features a customized System-on-a-Ship (SoC) GPU, which has up to 36 compute units, up to 2.23 GHz. This GPU is based on AMD’s rDNA 2 and is capable of 10.28 TFLOPS. A console with the combination of GPU and CPU, such as found on Sony’s PS5 is definitely a stunner. More so, the CPU and GPU are monitored by AMD’s SmartShift tech – this tech helps to boost the performance of PS5 by adjusting the frequencies in commensuration to the current activities the GPU and CPU.

Furthermore, Sony’s PS5 console comes with a hardware acceleration tech that works in real-time for ray-traced rendering. There’s equally a new audio tech – Tempest Engine available on PS5. Plus, PS5 comes with 16GB of GDDR6 SDRAM and 448GB/s bandwidth.

PS5 Packs an All-New SSD

According to Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s CEO, PS5 will feature a custom-built SSD that will enable fast-speed processing, better off PlayStation 4.

“In order to further enhance the sense of immersion in games, we expect to improve not just the resolution, but the speed of games. For example, through a custom-designed high-speed SSD, we plan to realize game data processing speeds that are approximately 100 times faster than PS4. Game load times should be much shorter, and players should be able to move through immense game worlds in almost an instant.”

Sony’s PS5 is 825GB for the custom SSD; it’s not up to what you’ll get on its rival – the Xbox Series X. The goal Sony looks to achieve by implementing a custom SSD is to create a storage solution that increases data input/output for fast loading times and broader bandwidth. Thus, PlayStation 5 games can be played in up to 8k resolution for deeper immersion.

Also, the 825GB SSD passes through a 12-channel interface to the main system; thus, providing uncompressed 5.5 GB/s transfer rate – this rate skyrockets to between 8-9 GB/s with the Oodle Kraken protocol from RAD Game Tools. PS5 will not consume as much energy as PS4, thanks to a suspended gameplay state.

PS4 Games Can Play on PS5

It sounds quite interesting to know that PlayStation 5 will support backward compatibility. Sony confirms that most top PS4 games will be fully compatible with PS5. The native support for PS4 games is one of the interesting things you should note about the PlayStation 5 console. More so, the PS4 games will run at an amplified processing speed to match the stable FPS on PS5.

PS5 Controller

PlayStation 5 is coming with an all-new wireless DualSense controller. This controller is different from the DualShock controller for PlayStation 4. Interestingly, the DualSense controller integrates a microphone array so that players can easily chat without needing a headset. Nevertheless, if you’re going to chat for a long time, using a headset is the best option.

Sony introduced the DualSense controller in two-toned design instead of the single colors on its base controllers. Also, the light bar was changed to another position, shifting from its position at the top region on DualShock 4 to the sides of the touchpad on DualSense. This makes DualSense appear more beautiful than DualShock 4.

Also, the DualSense controller has been handled by quite many gamers to ascertain its comfortability and ergonomics. With DualSense, Sony wishes to provide its customers with an all-new feeling for playing their favorite video games.

Price and Availability

While Sony has not released the official price for the PS5 console, rumors have it that the console will cost approx. $500 in North America

Totoki said – “What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time and depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay.”

However, a Bloomberg report in February 2020 estimated the cost of PS 5 to be about US$470, considering the components’ costs.
